Different Kinds of Love, and Different Kinds of Wedding Jewelry
Friday, September 30th, 2011I’ve been in love a couple of times in my life but I think this time, the third time, is a charm. Every love is different, some are grating loves that revolve around coveting and keeping the other person forever; others are more like deep-seated friendship that take into little account time spent with other people. Ultimately, there is no way of telling which is better. Whenever you’re in love it’s easy to fantasize about spending the rest of your life according to a mediated version of how you both could expect to live happily. But my latest girlfriend is it. She may not be as beautiful as my last loves, but she makes me happy. I’m still attracted to her, still proud to bring her around, although her gum line is a little low for my liking. But that could be fixed in the long run if I still feel the same way about it. She’s fun, smart, and ready for adventure. She comes from good family, has a great laugh and is fine with being the breadwinner.
We’ve been together for two years pretty strong and I’m beginning to think it may be time to buy wedding jewelry. I used to think that marriage was silly, and that it usually ends in divorce, but sometimes I find myself staring at that space of white throat underneath her ear, and I think about how beautiful my mother’s wedding earrings would look dangling there…
This love is different from the others in that it’s friendly and full of longing. It’s more like love for a sister, or a mother, in that you don’t need to spend every minute around them, and you know that whenever there’s an issue you can call her and she’ll be there to talk about it and sympathize with you. She’s the kind of woman who wouldn’t care about women’s diamond jewelry -not the kind of girl who says she doesn’t and really does, but the kind that actually does not care—a true rarity indeed. The result is that we are free to live our lives and yet we find ourselves magnetically attracted back to each other. At parties she joins my side and can take over the conversation while I refill her drink; coming back I’ll find her and the people she’s talking to in hysterics. She’s independent, adventurous and rather beautiful. She’s going to be my wife.
