A Brief Guide to Canadian Diamonds

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

By John Markus

The scramble for gold in the late 1800s was the key to many miners and prospectors striking it rich. The Northern regions of Canada proved massively fruitful, not just for gold, but also for oil, and more recently from diamonds. While the first ground was broken in the search for diamonds in the 1960s, it would be thirty years before these mines bore a significant amount of the precious stones. Diamond-rich ore was found in the Northwest Territories in the 1990s, and since then, Canada is known for its proliferation of the stones, third on the list dominated by Botswana and Russia. The source of 15% of the diamonds on the market, Canada’s diamond supply unearthed in the last thirteen years is valued at almost $3 billion. That breaks down to about $1.5 million worth of diamonds per day! Naturally, those who have persevered through the mining process since the 60s have been rewarded mightily for their work.

Canada’s first diamond mines were located on Point Lake, near Yellowknife. When diamonds began to turn up, several more mines were built. These mines are wide, exposed pits, and the freezing temperatures can make it an incredible challenge to maintain operations throughout the year. These mines have an average lifespan of twenty years. The Canadian diamond trade is known for its exquisite finished products.

Canada’s industry also bears the distinction of being morally superior to the African diamond trade, which has been rocked by negative media attention regarding the dubious ethical practices within the business. African diamond mines are generally located in volatile nations, and the heads of the mining industry are often tied up in the funding of terrorist activity and illegal arms deals. You can identify a Canadian diamond by any number of tiny logos embossed on the underside of the stone, invisible to the eye, but identifiable when the light filters through the stone.

Canadian diamonds tend to be naturally bright white, a desirable fashion characteristic. Employees of Canadian diamond mines generally make more than a sustainable income, often earning an annual salary in excess of $60,000. There is higher security in diamond mining jobs, although there are many temporary positions to be had. The Canadian diamond trade is a major employer of native peoples, for instance, the Yellowknife Dene Tribe owns and operates a large diamond cutting and processing center. Of course, there are plenty of diamond cutting and polishing specialists who emigrate from Asia and the Middle East, and make a good living on this highly specialized skill.

Often the raw stones are shipped to Canada’s major cities: Vancouver, Quebec, Toronto, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal, where they are processed, cut, polished, and mounted. The diamond industry is the source of thousands of jobs throughout Canada, both directly and incidentally tied to the trade. As the mines began to prove lucrative, it became necessary to build roads and homes in nearby areas. Business owners like grocers and restaurateurs have also benefited from the diamond industry’s success. The mines are still producing and they continue to grow.

The Definitive Guide to Antique Jewelry

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

By John Markus

Collectors and fashionistas alike rejoice in finding a truly special, one-of-a-kind piece of antique or vintage jewelry. Whether you run across an ornate Victorian treasure, a spare Colonial item, or a funky art-deco piece, this wearable art brings individuality to any outfit. As a gift, vintage and antique jewelry is incomparable, as it shows thought and personality. Or, if you simply collect beautiful items, antique jewelry has a value beyond mass-produced modern pieces, thanks to both the rarity of such pieces, and the craftsmanship involved in the design and construction. The value of antique jewelry has only to appreciate over time.

There are plenty of places to go if you’re hunting for antique jewelry. Estate sales are definitely your best bet, although auctions, antique malls, yard sales, and vintage clothing boutiques can also be good places to look. If you are looking for a particular style, then you might have more luck looking online at auction and sales sites like e-bay and Etsy give you the ability to really narrow and refine your search.

Of course, if you are an avid collector, and have a predilection for harder to find pieces, such as those from the Georgian period, then you know what a tough thing it can be to search for new items. The volume of wars (primarily the French Revolution and American Revolution), and invasions during this time had the result of massive destruction and loss of property. That said, if you happen to find a piece from this period, hold on to it or put it in a museum, for it is an artifact, and something special indeed.

Not since the end of the Georgian era have craftsmen designed and constructed such ornate pieces. The ornate cameos, and filigree, and the finely cut gemstones cannot be imitated. Victorian era jewelry is somewhat easier to find. This period is marked by many distinctive design styles, as Queen Victoria had a widespread influence on culture and the arts. The reign of Victoria was marked by long periods of somberness, bookended by romance and celebration, as she was married during her dominion, and spent years in mourning after her husband’s death. Victorian jewelry can range from radiant gold, which marks the beginning of the era, to rather austere pieces common during the Queen’s mourning, to dazzling diamonds popularized during the colonization of South Africa.

Much jewelry from the Victorian era still survives, but there is also a proliferation of reproductions, so be sure what you find is authentic by having it appraised by a professional. Check for things like signatures or maker’s marks on the back of pendants or on the insides of bracelets and rings. Or, if you simply enjoy the appearance of this era’s wearable art, look to reproductions as an affordable alternative. Additionally, with reproductions, you won’t have the fear of losing or damaging a piece by wearing it to a special event. These affordable and beautiful pieces give you the option of wearing a stunning piece on any occasion at all.

Why Should You Buy Jewelry During Harder Times?

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Many people buy jewelry for various reasons. Some of these reasons are: To satisfy personal wants; To give as gifts; To have something to use for special occasions; As a fashion statement. The reasons may be hundreds as we do not know what is in a person’s mind. However, there is a reason for buying jewelry that is not in the category of beauty or fashion. That purpose is investment.

Jewelry comes in various forms. It may be a necklace, an earring or a ring. Commonly, ladies or women mostly prefer wearing them. Men also wear jewelry but usually rings and necklaces.

The economic standing of people who buy jewelry differs. Practically, we can say that most people who buy jewelry are rich because they can afford to buy them. Those in the middles class may opt to buy jewelry too, but the value of the jewelry depends on their financial standing in life. Poor people obviously cannot buy jewelry. The poor has little means to support their basic needs and so it would be foolish to spend their limited cash to such luxury such as jewelry. However, to satisfy the need of some people to wear jewelry despite the lack of means to buy one, these people resort to buying fakes or imitations.

During trying times, it may seem unwise to buy jewelry. A lot of people may be out of work or unemployed. When the economy is on a slump, perhaps the best advice to give to people is to save money, avoid unnecessary expenses and live within your means. Obviously, to buy jewelry at this time is an unnecessary expense and tantamount to wasting money. Jewelry is a want or a luxury and not a need. Therefore, during trying or hard times, the best action is to do away with luxury such as jewelry.

However, there is another way to look at jewelries. Since jewelries are precious stones their value does not depreciate and, in fact, appreciates over time. Hence, when you buy jewelry, it may be considered as an investment. In fact, you do not have to wear the jewel you bought. Let it stay in the drawer or in the safe for as long as you want. Thereafter, stay on the look-out for any changes in the market value of the precious stone or object incorporated in the jewelry. If, the value increases, the jewelry may be sold at the appreciated value and presto, a return of investment.

The middle class people and even the poor may also buy jewelry not only for the purpose of investment. During hard times or when cash is short, the jewel may be brought at a pawnshop for instant cash. However, make sure to get it back by paying the money loaned.

In case, the purpose of the person to buy jewelry is for investment, perhaps this word of advice. Not all is knowledgeable in the trade of jewelry. The determination of the genuineness and true value of the jewelry should be left to the experts. In this manner, be sure to avail their services. Finally, this kind of investments should be done with care since the business of jewelry is infested with scams and frauds.

Things to Consider When Buying Yellow Diamond Engagement Rings

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Yellow diamond engagement rings are one of the many choices to give by a man who already decided to tie the knot and found the right woman. Generally, a man looking for a ring has only two criteria in buying one: Price or value and how it looks.

Engagement rings are used by men, in general, to propose marriage to a girl. When the girl accepts and wears the ring, it means she accepts the proposal and wants to marry the man. An engagement ring also means a conditional gift for the bride to be. It means unconditional because the ring as a gift is conditioned to the acceptance of the girl of the marriage proposal by the man who gave the ring. When the marriage does not take place, the gift is not a gift anymore and is returned to the man.

The value of the engagement ring given is relevant in the sense of its symbolic meaning. It is said that the price of the serves as a gauge on the degree of love of the man and the importance of the woman.

There are many choices for an engagement ring. Most often than not, the usual ring given are diamond rings such as yellow diamond engagement rings. In terms of value, it can be said that all diamonds can be classified as expensive and priceless.

Diamonds are known as hard and lasting. This may also be the reason why diamonds are given to profess love by a man to a woman. When a man gives a diamond ring, it is like saying to the woman that the man’s love is lasting.

Nowadays, diamonds come in different sizes, shapes and even color. The most common color of diamond ring is white or the clear ones. There are also diamonds that come in color blue, pink, red, and the yellow diamond engagement rings.
Provided that budget is not an issue, the first decision to be made is, what color of the diamond to buy. If the man buys a clear or white diamond, this may be considered playing safe and being ordinary. On the other hand, buying a colored diamond, like the yellow diamond engagement rings, may mean the man is trying to be unique and different. A colored diamond may also be means telling to the girl that she is special.

The man who chose to buy colored diamonds like yellow diamond engagement rings should be ready to spend a little more. These types of diamonds are rare and definitely more expensive. Nonetheless, woman will certainly appreciate yellow diamond engagement rings or any other colored diamonds since these will stand out. Imagine seeing in the hands of woman a diamond with a different color.

Nonetheless, diamonds will always be diamonds. They will always be appreciated by the woman getting it, whether they are white or, yellow diamond engagement rings.

A Brief Guide to Irish Wedding Rings

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

By John Markus

The Irish Claddagh ring is one of the most popular styles and is heralded for the lovely lore which accompanies the design. Of course, there are many other popular Irish wedding rings, like Spirals, Shield Knots, and Sun Symbols that delight with their own beauty, craftsmanship, and legends. The Claddagh ring, named for a fishing village in Ireland, is a symbol of devotion, affection, and harmony. The ring’s distinctive appearance should be familiar to many: two open hands cradle a heart, which is topped with a crown. The hands symbolize harmony and friendship; the heart, affection; and the crown signifies devotion.

There are several ways to wear the Claddagh ring, and each one has its own meaning. As a gift of friendship, the recipient should wear the ring on the right hand, and the point of the heart will face out toward the fingers. If the ring is given as an engagement ring, the ring is again worn on the right hand, but the heart points in, to the body and heart of the recipient. To wear the Claddagh as a wedding ring, it should be worn on the left hand with the heart pointing in.

The story behind the Claddagh ring dates back to the 17th century, and involves a groom-to-be: a fisherman named Richard Joyce who, with his crew who were kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Algeria. In Algeria, Joyce became the property of a goldsmith, under whose authority he too learned the trade. With his new skill, he fashioned a special ring meant to symbolize the love, devotion, and friendship he so missed in his betrothed.

At the end of the century, the slaves of Algeria were freed. The goldsmith implored Joyce to stay on with him, and even offered his daughter and part of his estate to retain his help. Joyce could not find it in his heart to stay, and he went home to Ireland. Back in the village of Claddagh, Joyce was delighted to find that his fiancé had waited faithfully for his return, and he presented her with the golden ring he had made. The two were finally married, as the legend concludes. The Claddagh design became a popular token of both romantic and platonic love, and thenceforth bore the name of the fishing village from where its maker hailed. In the years that followed, artisans and craftsmen would stay true to the original design, although some would make additions like jewels, or embellish on the design of the hands, heart and crown. Today there are many spins on the original design, ranging from the addition of Celtic knot work, to jeweled hearts, cuffs, and crowns, to sleek and spare modern designs that are barely three-dimensional. Gold and silver are the most popular materials for the ring, although platinum, stainless, copper, and tungsten rings are becoming more widely available. Although the ring is traditionally popular among those with Irish heritage, its lovely design and legend make it popular among people from every background.
